ELECTION PROCEDURE OF CANDIDATES

  1. Become a Member of the State Assembly.

    To become a member of the State Assembly (DUN) for any state then that person must be nominated and win the state election.

  2. Eligibility Requirements to Become a Candidate

    State Assembly Elections

    • A Malaysian citizen and resident in the state where he wishes to compete.
    • Not less than 21 years old or 18 years old based on the provisions of the Federal Constitution or State Constitution/Government Body Laws/Government Body Constitution Laws/Government Self-Government Laws respectively on the day of nomination.
  3. Disqualification to be a Candidate
    1. Found or certified to be of unsound mind;
    2. A bankrupt who has not been released;
    3. A person who holds an “earning position”;
    4. When a person has been nominated for the Dewan Rakyat or Dewan Undangan Negeri elections or has been an Election Agent for the person who has been nominated, he has failed to submit a statement of election expenses as required by law within the required time and manner;
    5. A person who has been convicted of an offense by a court in the Federation (or before Malaysia Day in the areas of Sabah or Sarawak or Singapore) and sentenced to imprisonment for a period of not less than one (1) year or fined not less than two thousand Malaysian ringgit ( RM2,000.00) and has not yet received forgiveness;
    6. Found to have obtained citizenship or to have used the citizenship rights of a foreign country or to have made a declaration of allegiance to any foreign country.
  4. Deposit

    The law stipulates that a person who wants to contest in an election is required to make a deposit of RM 5,000.00. If the deposit money is not included, the nomination paper is considered incomplete and the Managing Officer has the authority not to accept the nomination paper.

  5. Deposit of Election Campaign Materials

    Candidates must pay a deposit of RM3,000.00 for election campaign materials. Candidates who fail to submit a deposit of campaign materials are not allowed to install or display any election campaign materials. If convicted under Section of the Election Offenses Act 1954 in relation to the matter, the Candidate concerned may be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or a fine not exceeding three thousand ringgit or both.

  6. Privileges For A Candidate On Voting Day

    Candidates are allowed to visit the following places:

    1. Voting/counting place.
    2. The center counts early votes.
    3. Center for the production, opening and counting of postal ballots.
    4. Official Vote Tallying Center.
